Plugged is a new community powered by The Generalist Co. Here’s the story of our first event.
So it begins: a new way of doing community!
Last weekend, we hosted Residentials Vol I, the official launch event for Plugged. It brought to fruition our goals of revolutionising stale, same-old networking events and instead finding ways to make real connections that don’t start and end with an add on LinkedIn. Here’s how it went down.
After an illustrious redecoration of the Generalist Co. founder Josh’s home, the stage was set. The decision to host Plugged in a home represents the essence of the community itself; creating an atmosphere where genuine connections flourish, and that begins with stepping away from the ordinary and embracing a more personal, unconventional experience. We were determined not to ask founders to spend their Saturday nights in just another office space! While welcoming founders in to a residential space felt out of the ordinary, it marked a first-of-its-kind event and showed us how much environment can affect connections. How many networking events have you been to with a shoes-off policy?
We started the evening by gathering round what we dubbed 'the fireside' (lit by a neon light), cosied up in the living room on floor cushions. We had the privilege of hearing Danny Martinez take us through his exciting journey from Ops at Airbnb to starting his very own venture. Josh and Danny shared personal insights on building trust with employees, the crucial art of hiring the right people, and taking the step into forging your own path out of a large company. Thank you so much to our mentor-in-residence for being part of this event.
Then the festivities began, with our very own mixologist shaking up some of the best drinks a networking event has ever seen. We unplugged, got loose, and shook off the week. When you bring together creatives, AI experts, and marketing pros under one roof, you better have some good tunes flowing. Thanks to Josh’s timeless DJ set, they certainly were! We formed connections over party games, cocktails, and glow sticks, because why not?
